AETNA and HUSKY-MEDICAID
If you have a prescription for a wig, hairpiece or cranial/hair prosthesis from your physician with a diagnosis code on it that Aetna or Husky-Medicaid will cover, we can bill your insurance directly. Our contracted rate with Aetna is up to $1,000. Husky-Medicaid covers up to $250.
Connecticut is one of six states with legislation concerning chemotherapy induced hair loss. It requires insurance companies to cover up to $350 for a wig with some exceptions. Some insurance policies may cover more. Some policies only cover wigs for chemotherapy induced hair loss and some policies cover a variety of hair loss diagnoses. Deductibles and co-pays may apply.
Medicare does not cover wigs. Sometimes Medicare Advantage Plans and Supplemental Plans do cover wigs.
Even if you don't have insurance coverage for a wig, if you have a prescription for a wig, your purchase will be sales tax exempt. We will need a copy of the prescription for our records.

Ask if you have coverage for a wig based on your policy and diagnosis.
If you do, you may want to ask the following questions:
- How much will they pay?
- How often? If it's one wig a year, is it one wig per 365 days or one wig per calendar year (in which case you can get one in December and one in January)?
- Do I have to go to an in-network provider or can I get the same coverage out-of-network? If there is a difference, see if there is a viable in-network provider within a reasonable radius of your home. If not, sometimes you can get your carrier to make an exception and allow you the in-network benefit with an out-of-network provider..
- Is there a deductible or a co-pay and have I met them?
- Do I have a tiered plan? If so, get more specific details about how that applies to getting a wig.
- How do I submit my claim for reimbursement and how long does it take to get it?
- Or, if you don't want to pay up-front, ask how to go about it.
